Becoming a new mom during the pandemic has, to say the least, been a life changing experience. Most of our family lives out of state, and play-dates with other moms weren’t happening. I’ve had many, many days at home with Karl and our daughter Leah. Throughout it all, she truly has been our little ray of light, which is why I immediately knew I wanted her first birthday to have a “You are Our Sunshine” theme. Also, Leah’s late great grandmother sang me this song when I was little, and it’s one I enjoy singing to her.
In true pandemic fashion, Leah’s first birthday cake smash took place on zoom. As much as this party was for her, planning the decorations and making it feel extra special was also my way of celebrating surviving a year of pandemic parenthood.
It was fun seeing friends and family from around the country! They helped us celebrate our little one with a front row, virtual seat for her first birthday cake smash!
I had this acrylic sign made from Blush and Blooms Design as a small first birthday keepsake that could easily be saved. Now that the party is over, I’m going to frame it for Leah’s room. If only I could find a way to save these delightful sugar cookies forever though! Ricas Cookies did such an incredible job, and they were delicious too!
My mom came to town for Leah’s cake smash and got a few photos of all three of us together! Thankfully, these shots are so much better than I could have gotten with a tripod and timer!
Leah: “I was told there would be cake…I am waiting…”
Leah flashed her signature mischievous look as she dug her hands into the cake.
My amazing mother-in-law shipped us homemade “Stelter cookies” from Chicago! They arrived individually wrapped so guests could easily take some home.
After all the cake smash excitement, Leah didn’t nap at all and was sooo tired for her afternoon party. But she rallied and was such a champ!
